MEET DERRICK BREADY

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES

Tell us a little about you and your family: 

I hail from Texas (though, born in Wichita!) after public school teaching and finishing my doctorate at Baylor University (Sic ‘Em!). I am an Assistant Professor of Music at Missouri Southern State in Joplin, MO. My family is back in Texas and I miss my niece and 2 nephews who adoringly call me “Bubba."

Although it's hard to pick just one, what is your "verse to live by": 

“Whatever you do, work heartily for the Lord and not for man.” - Colossians 3:23

What are your favorite things/hobbies to do in your free time? 

I am unapologetically a Disney adult and will travel to Walt Disney World whenever I can. I also enjoy visiting NYC but when I can’t travel, I enjoy working out at Orangetheory Fitness and cheering for my favorite baseball team - the 2017 (no trash talk allowed) and 2022 World Series Champions Houston Astros.

Tell us a little about your past roles, education, or anything else you'd like us to know: 

I taught public school choir and voice for 20 years in Houston and just complete a doctorate of sacred music from Baylor. I have always served bivocationally with a church music ministry - my longest being Gloria Dei Lutheran in Nassau Bay, TX.

What is one thing that people might be surprised to learn about you? 

At the age of 40, I had cardiac arrest in the gym! Don’t worry - the ticker plumbing was cleaned out and all is well.

What is your favorite thing about Emmanuel Lutheran Church? 

Every time I step inside the doors, someone is always saying, “Welcome Home!” - This is very comforting!!
